In his despatch Ro, 316 Confidential of september
22, 1905 Sir E. Jalow enclosed a copy of the grement
concluded between the Government of longkong and the
Viceroy of Suchang by which the former lent to the pro-
vinces of Hupai, Hunan and Kuangtung the sum of £1,100,
QUG for the purpose of redeeming the concession granted
in 1890 to the American China Development Company for
the construction of a railway from Canton to "ankow.
I have now the honour to report that this loan has
been redeemed in accordance with the schedule for the
repayment of principal and interest attached to the
Agreement. This marks the and of a transaction which
formed the basis of quch discussion for years between
ourselves and the Chineva Goverment in connection with
railway concessions in the Yangtze valley and which,
in some respects, disappointed the expectations to
which its conclusion gave rise at the time.
